CLOSE GUANTANAMO, January 10 - 11, Philadelphia. January 11, 2008 marks the 6th anniversary of the first arrival of"detainees" - prisoners - at the Guantanamo Bay Prison Camp.

Friday, January 11, Noon, Phila. Federal Courthouse,
601 Market Street. The Brandywine Peace Community will be
joining in the Nationwide Day of Action to CLOSE GUANTANAMO
(www.witnesstorture.org). Along with the American Civil Liberties
Union, Phila. Chapter, Brandywine will conduct a demonstration in
Philadelphia beginning at noon on January 11.
The Demonstration will begin with a vigil in front of Phila. Federal
Courthouse, 6th & Market Sts., where the names of Guantanamo
prisoners will be read. Some people will be chained together wearing
black hoods and orange jump suits during the Courthouse vigil and then
will be "pulled" in dramatic procession with bell-tolling, banners, and
signs
through the historic district of Philadephia, and past the "icons of
liberty" -
the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, concluding at the Constitution
Center.

Sunday, January 13, 2008 - "Fighting for National Health Insurance: A
Civil Rights Movement for Universal [Single Payer] Healthcare", film and
talk by nationally known consultant on public health and health care
reform, Dr. Walter Tsou
MD, MPH, Walter Tsou is currently on the visiting faculty of the
University of Pennsylvania. He was President of the American Public
Health Association in 2005 and served as the Health Commissioner of
Philadelphia from April 2000 to February 2002. He has extensive
experience in public health and has lectured widely on public health and
health disparities, including recent testimony in the U.S. Congress.
A founding member of the National Board of Public Health Examiners and
the national board of Physicians for a National Health Program. Locally
he is on the boards of Philadelphia Physicians for Social Responsibility
and the Philadelphia Area Committee to Defend Health Care. His medical
degree is from the University of Pennsylvania; his MPH is from the Johns
Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, and he has an honorary
Doctorate in Medical Sciences from Drexel University.

to Lockheed Martin, the world's largest weapons corporation and the Iraq
War's chief weapons profiteer.
Since the start of the Brandywine Peace Community in 1977, we have begun
the new year with nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience honoring,
in deed for justice and peace, the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Hear the words of Dr. King on January 11. Make the Connections: Poverty,
Environmental Neglect, Violence and War. In word, song, and action,

Sunday, June 8, 4:30PM - "King, Kennedy, Chicago: 40 Years in the Wilderness, Is it Time to Cross the River?", Rabbi Arthur Waskow, Shalom Center Rabbi Arthur Waskow directs the Shalom Center in Philadelphia, PA. (www.shalomctr.org) and is the author of many books, including The Freedom Seder (1977) and with Sister Joan Chittister and Murshid Saadi Shakur Chishti) The Tent of Abraham: Stories of Hope and Peace for Jews, Christians, and Muslims (2007). Vietnam War era activist and writer, Waskow was a fellow at the progressive Institute for Policy Studies in Wash., DC, and was one of the authors of "A Call to Resist Illegitimate Authority". Waskow was embroiled in the turmoil around the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, both as a delegate inside the convention and in the street during the police riot, and testified at the famed Chicago 8 trial.

The program, with Phila. area directors of the New Sanctuary Movement, will separate the reality of immigration and the rising tide of arrests and deportations from the anti-immigrant rhetoric of fear and hatred. How can we respond with justice and love in such a climate?

Peter Pedemonti, co-director of the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadlephia, is a community member of the House of Grace Catholic Worker. The House of Grace operates a free medical clinic and house of hospitality in Kensington, and works on issues of peace and justice. Before coming to Philadelphia, Peter was the director of public education and outreach for Citizens Campaign for the Environment, an environmental organization in New York, and Neighbors of Onondaga Nation, a Native American rights organization.
Margaret Sawyer is co-director of the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, and an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. Margaret lived and worked for two years at Annunciation House in El Paso, Texas, a house of hospitality for people arriving in the US from across the border.During seminary, she interned with a Lutheran congregation of recent immigrants in New York City, and helped the congregation establish an immigrant resource center. Margaret currently serves a UCC congregation as associate pastor,in West Philadelphia.

Sunday, December 14 - big screen showing of Poet of Poverty, www.poetofpoverty.com . Poet of Poverty tells the story of Father Michael Doyle and his ministry to the people of Camden, New Jersey. One of the famed "Camden 28" Vietnam war resisters, who in 1971, were arrested and tried for destroying draft files in the city's draft board, Father Doyle came to Camden from Ireland forty years ago and never left. The film, narrated by film star Martin Sheen, features letters written over the years to supporters, letters that convey the anger, sadness, and despair over the daily injustice that is the total neglect of Camden, the poorest city in the nation. The film brings us street level to the heart of a forgotten city, as shared in the words, deeds, and hopes of a natural born Irish poet.
